Layered outfit. Layering in clothes. combination rules. All layers must be visible

To look stylish, you should once and for all separate two concepts from each other: layering and “dressing like cabbage.” The first represents one of the modern trends, which is also ultra relevant for the cold season, the second indicates a lack of taste. So, let's find out how to properly use layering in clothes.

Rules for creating multi-layer kits

1. It must be said right away that the technique of layering in clothing was created exclusively for slender and thin women. Such a solution will most likely turn the plump figure into a shapeless ball. Moreover, the emphasis on the waist, which usually allows you to harmonize the proportions, will not help in this case.

2. Multi-layering refers to several types of clothing that are worn under each other according to the principle short over long. The exception is wardrobe items that are worn unbuttoned: jackets, coats, vests, etc. They may be longer than the previous item.

3. Items whose design imitates layering, for example, a jumper with a sewn collar and shirt cuffs, are actually far from the essence of our trend. This option has the right to exist only if you are afraid of adding extra volume to yourself. In the original interpretation, multi-layering implies the presence of several full-fledged components, for example, a shirt with classic vest and a jacket or 2 multi-colored tops worn under a knitted blouse with open shoulders.

4. As for, they should not be too obvious. Ideally, the color of one layer should smoothly transition into another. To avoid mistakes, use combination schemes.

5. Layering is used exclusively in the upper part of the images. Wearing jeans with colored leggings or gaiters showing is bad manners.

From theory to practice!

Let's look at several traditional and win-win image options. Use a long shirt or T-shirt as a basis, preferably made from natural cotton fabric or light chiffon. The color can be any, but the easiest way to start experiments is with white, black or gray. The style is classic or, in the case of a more daring bow, with an uneven cut at the bottom, the effect of an unfinished product or an incorrectly cut one. By the way, the technique of layering very often uses clothes with asymmetrical designs to add dynamics to images. The length of the shirt can be the same as a mini dress or shorter. Keep in mind that this is the longest part of the set, and it should peek out from under the outer layers of clothing; everything else is shortened. So, choose top or as the first component.

The second layer can consist of a cardigan, jumper, sweater, and sometimes even any two of the listed elements of their loose fabrics (for example, a jumper and a vest or two vests). The color should be a darker or lighter shade compared to the shirt. A print is allowed, but not too flashy; limit yourself to a classic check or stripe.

The next layer is outerwear: jackets, coats, jackets, fur voluminous vests. And to finish off the whole look, we complement the whole look with a large chunky knit scarf; if you wish, you can even twist 2 different colored ones. In addition, scarves and hats are suitable as final details.

Other accessories should include only a belt or belt and a bag. A belt is most often simply irreplaceable and helps to emphasize the waist hidden under many layers. There should be no various jewelry in the form of earrings, bracelets, beads, necklaces and other things, or a minimum amount (choose one), because it is easy to overload a set with many things.

Remember how, as children, we didn’t like it when they put more than one layer of clothes on us so that we wouldn’t freeze. Nowadays, layering in clothing is fashion trend, which is followed by designers all over the world. An interesting trend is considered a sign of taste and style and is not only a sign that you will not freeze, but also individuality and a complex, intricate nature.

The style began quite a long time ago, back in the days of the hippies, but in recent years, starting in 2014, layering has gained unprecedented popularity among admirers street style and grunge, and among aristocrats and connoisseurs of rigor and classics. Skirts and dresses with trousers, shirts with sweaters and vests, T-shirts on top of shirts are an integral part of this trend, which not only allows you to keep warm in the cold season, but also changes classic look for something new and tempting.

To emphasize your style and look impressive and harmonious, you should know the basic rules for using layering. Some criteria that are recommended to be followed will make you a real style icon. We will tell you 5 principles by which you should use multi-layering in clothes; photos in a similar style can be easily found on the Internet, or you can immediately try out the look on yourself when you come to the store.

Rules for layering in clothes

The first rule, thanks to which you will look interesting and mysterious, is not to use more than four things. If you choose business style, you can use trousers or a skirt in combination with a shirt worn under a sweater, you can also use a jacket or vest, which will add unobtrusive severity and, at the same time, will not create the impression of excessive pretentiousness.

The second rule that should be followed is that the layering style in clothing does not tolerate a combination of complex cut elements. If you put on several things with complex fittings and different styles, and at the same time decorate it with numerous accessories, the oversaturation of the image will be visible, which will lead to exactly what we didn’t like so much in childhood - “dressed like cabbage”. It is very easy to avoid this, use a classic style, cut of clothes, if you want to wear a sweater or jacket with asymmetry, other wardrobe items should be of a simple and straight cut. In addition, many stylists recommend using tight clothes in combination with loose ones, since a large number of baggy things will make any figure an irregular, unattractive shape.

The third condition is the combination of colors, you should be careful here, bright prints and patterns should not overlap each other, but you should also not be too orderly in choosing the same color. The best option would be the three-color rule. This is the perfect amount to remain stylish and mysterious at the same time. For example, a combination of a Lacoste shirt with a sweatshirt or sweater would be a good idea. Discreet shades will complement each other; the third component can be an elegant accessory, for example, a scarf.

The fourth rule is related to texture, a combination of things from different fabrics will give the image completeness and convenience. Combine leather and wool, cotton with latex, silk and leather also look great, which is often recommended by stylists and experts on trends and the latest looks.

The fifth rule, last on the list, but not least, is the length of clothing. Most often it is recommended to increase the length of the layer each time, but this is not a 100% law. There are many images when there is no place for it. For example, when using a LEVI’S shirt, you can complement your look with a vest, and the combination of shorts and tights looks extremely stylish and interesting for a girl. You can also break the rule with the length of clothing in the case of a skirt over a dress, a leather biker jacket worn over a long sweater; interesting colors of sweaters or Penfield are always suitable for such jackets. You can complete the look stylish jeans CARHARTT WIP.

The principle of layering in clothing

Looking stylish can sometimes seem like a difficult task, especially when you use different layers and additional accessories and details. The main principle is to follow the rules and have a sense of your own style. Choose clothes based on personal preferences, not forgetting the number of colors and asymmetries. The presence of layers can also be created through one outfit, for example, the layering in the 2016/17 clothing in the Alessandro Michele collection consists of pleated skirts, which looks very fresh and interesting, given the more strict traditions in previous years. Also in other collections of the new fall/winter seasons, this style plays an important role, combined with comfortable coats and cardigans. A warm and stylish look is especially relevant in the cold seasons, and therefore its popularity does not decrease, but only gains momentum, helping everyone find their own individual look.

“Multi-layering is the principle of combining several items of clothing into a single ensemble, allowing you to vary their purpose depending on the situation or season”- this is how the fashion encyclopedia explains this word (Andreeva R., 1997). Mothers and grandmothers find multi-layering a more concise, but at the same time capacious definition - “I put it on again - it’s Saturday from under Friday!”

Layering in clothing originates from sports style. By the way, the sports trend in clothing has given rise to many styles that are popular today, for example, casual, in which layering is also encouraged.

Multilayer sets fascinate with the interweaving of things, accessories, palette of colors and optical illusions. By correctly constructing a multi-layered outfit, you can visually correct a large belly, hide figure flaws and focus on its advantages. However, often multi-layered ensembles look flat, scanty or very overloaded. To avoid such misunderstandings, it is enough to follow a few rules, but first it is worth clarifying that multi-layering does not necessarily mean a large number of things collected into a single ensemble. A jacket worn over a shirt, top or knitted T-shirt is already multi-layered! (Shirt is the first layer, jacket is the second layer). If you add a decoration in the form of a pendant on a long chain, a massive necklace or a scarf to a shirt and jacket, then a third layer is formed!

It may seem that the less clothing is used in a multi-layered set, the “cleaner” the image will look, but it is easy to miss the mark in multi-layering with both a minimum and a large number of layers.

In this case, not much depends on the quantity of clothing, but almost everything depends on the quality, in particular on the texture of the fabric, colors and patterns, accessories and details!

So, the key to the success of multi-layer kit No. 1 is different textured fabrics.

The more the materials used in a multi-layer ensemble differ from each other, the more harmonious the image ultimately develops.
The outfits that look the most interesting are those with a wide range of textures. For example, bouclé fabric and silk, leather and chiffon, fur and fine knitwear, etc.

(A small lyrical digression: at one time, when I just started to figure out “what to wear with what, when and why?”, many of my images turned out flat. “Good advisers” immediately began to give out recommendations like “change your bag” or “shoes here doesn’t fit,” and in most cases it was a matter of incorrectly mixing textures. But now I have a whole carload of examples of “how not to do it”).

So, the error “items made from fabrics of similar textures in one set”:

A smooth dress, an ugly, even glossy trench coat, patent leather shoes, a smooth bag with a slight roughness that does not take away from the overall smoothness.
And another example, the fabrics of a dress and a cardigan are almost identical in density and looseness (on right).

We change a loose cardigan for a thicker cotton raincoat, matte leather boots for glossy boots and the picture changes (left)!

Multilayer sets will look dynamic and uncluttered if you use and combine items made from thin and/or flexible fabrics.
And again the same example: a static dress of their thick cotton and the same static, even thicker trench coat.

A good example: chiffon skirt + rough sweater + sleeveless coat.

The key to success of a multi-layer kit No. 2 - colors and designs.
When composing a multi-layer set, you should use no more than two chromatic colors. The remaining colors can be either achromatic (all shades of gray, white and black), or sandy-brown-beige colors.

Red, orange, pink, mustard, green, black - the set is overloaded with color.

Even very heavy fabrics of different items that are similar in texture can look acceptable together if the ensemble is monochrome.

Harmonious everyday looks.

And again an example: a dress in a tartan check, which is formed from intertwining red, black, beige and milky lines, a gray cardigan, a colorful tapestry bag and brown boots - more than 6 colors in one outfit (on right).

Changing the cardigan. The shoes and bag are black, and the set no longer looks so overloaded and ridiculous (left).

If a multi-layered look contains an item with a pattern - a stripe, a checkered pattern, a floral print, it will stand out in the set and require color support with other items or accessories.

The blue check of the shirt is supported by the color of the jeans.

The key to success of a multi-layer kit No. 3 - accessories.
On accessories Lately Everyone is crazy, if not in practice (use in everyday wardrobe), then in words - for sure! Beads, necklaces, rings, bracelets, belts, scarves - this is just the tip of the iceberg of accessories that a woman should supposedly wear. But when it comes to multi-layer sets, the situation is completely different:

It is better to use bright accessories of chromatic colors in the form of bags, clutches, gloves, i.e. things that are not directly involved in the image, but rather complement it.
- the brighter the accessory, the more restrained in color the multi-layer set should be.

- multi-layering is self-sufficient in itself, so you should very carefully introduce accessories with a pronounced ethnicity into your images.

How to insulate yourself so as not to freeze in a coat and spend most of the winter in it?

1. Sweater + wool jumper + coat

The easiest way to combat the cold and still wear a coat is to wear several warm sweaters or jumpers at once. At least two. The main thing is that they must be thick and always contain content. natural wool. It’s good if it’s a high-neck sweater and a chunky knit jumper. And yes, choose an oversized jumper, otherwise it will either not stretch over the sweater at all, or it will unpleasantly restrict movement.

2. Sweater + fur coat+ oversized coat

There's nothing wrong with layering one coat over another. Especially if they are made of different materials. So, first we put on a warm sweater, then a thin fur coat (namely a coat, not a fur coat, read about the differences in the post “”) and complete the look with a voluminous autumn-spring coat. Of course, in Russia we won’t wear such a set with loafers (as the fashionista in the photo does), so I’ll change them for winter ankle boots.

3. Sweater + wool cardigan + cape + snood

We have already said that in the fall of 2016 they returned to fashion. Should you wear a sleeveless coat in winter? Yes, why not, but only with a very, very thick jumper. How to dress so as not to get sick? You will need a thick turtleneck, a woolen jumper with buttons, a cape, a snood scarf, and gloves. We mix these things in one image and go for a walk.

4. Turtleneck + suede jacket + coat

Have you put your demi-season jacket in the closet to wait for spring? In vain. Get it! It can be worn directly under a coat. Yes, why? It’s warm and there’s no air flowing through.

5. Coat + overcoat

And again the combination “coat + coat”. It is unlikely that you will be able to put two thick coats on each other at once: firstly, it will be difficult, and secondly, it will be uncomfortable (one sleeve simply will not fit into the other sleeve). Therefore, remember: the undercoat should be thinner, almost summer-like, and not too voluminous. The outer layer is woolen, thick, one size larger than usual (or oversize). Only if these conditions are met will the image be comfortable and stylish.

6. Sweater + vest + coat

In one sweater and coat, of course, it’s warm, but not so warm that you can walk around calmly on a snowy day. Here you need some kind of “thermal insulating layer”, for example, a vest made of thick fabric. This way, the vest will additionally protect your back from the cold and wind, and you will be much more comfortable walking in a coat when it’s winter outside. And yes, don’t look at girls who walk in the snow in shoes, wear boots or shoes.

7. Coat + cape

It's simple: put on a coat and a cape or poncho on top. It's almost the same as if you wrapped yourself in a cozy blanket and went outside in it. It seems to us that such a winter outfit looks interesting and fashionable, and most importantly, the image turns out comfortable and warm.

8. Shirt + jacket + coat

We find a beautiful jacket in the closet (the thicker its fabric, the better), combine it with a long-sleeved shirt and complement the look with a warm coat (or parka). Do you think it’s possible to walk like this until mid-winter?

9. Sweater + sleeveless coat + classic coat

Surely you are aware that sleeveless coats have become fashionable over the last couple of seasons (they look like long vests, but are made of thicker fabric). The point is that such a coat can be easily worn under a classic coat and thus create a comfortable winter-autumn look. And again, the main and most valuable places (butt, kidneys, back) will be saved from frost, and if your hands are cold, add long leather gloves to your outfit.

10. Turtleneck + jumper with V-neck+ long jacket + coat

Some fashionistas like to do everything on themselves at once, and sometimes they are great at combining 6-7 things in one outfit. Look at the photo: the beautiful girl first put on a turtleneck, on top of the turtleneck - a jumper with a V-neck, on top of the jumper - an elongated jacket, and on top of all this - a straight-cut coat. We are sure that she is warm. However, it is better to replace pumps with winter ankle boots with thick heels.

11. Turtleneck + denim shirt + denim shirt (one tone darker) + coat

Some people combine two coats in one look, while others wear two denim shirts at once. Denim is a dense material, so two shirts paired with a turtleneck can easily replace a warm sweater. We throw a coat over our shoulders and go for a winter walk with peace of mind.

12. Shirt + Leather Jacket+ coat + scarf

And again a leather jacket, and again a coat! Yes, yes, now it’s normal to mix two types of autumn outerwear and get a completely winter outfit from them. And don’t forget to wrap a woolen scarf around your neck to prevent catching a cold.

Layering in clothing is gaining popularity every day, and the ability to do it correctly is an indicator of a good sense of proportion and taste. The task of creating a set that will look perfect is not an easy one: you need to not only mix it correctly, but also preserve correct sequence so that all elements are harmoniously combined in one single image.

How layering became fashionable

Multi-layering became widespread in the 70s of the last century, and was most influenced by the hippie movement, which was fashionable at that time. They didn’t even think about following any rules; they dressed in bulky shirts, vests or some kind of tunics.

Subsequently, the images were created according to the same type by stylists, and on the spreads of fashion magazines one could find photos from fashion shows. The proposed sets were not complicated enough, and they could be worn to work.

Popularity of style

There are several reasons why layering has become so popular:

  • basic things can be played up in unusual ways and created an interesting set;
  • the ability to successfully combine things will allow you to create a large number of images without having a large amount of clothes;
  • Layering can hide figure imperfections.

Rules for compiling kits

  1. The set will look great if you combine fabrics based on contrast. The structure can be contrasted: smoothness and relief, rough leather with cashmere, vinyl with cotton. For beginners, it is better to adhere to the principle: the layer that is closer to the body should be made of thin material.
  1. Layering looks good if the size is not larger than XS. For those who have larger shapes, do not be upset, but watch how the accents are placed when creating an image. A thin waist is emphasized with a belt, and slender legs are emphasized with a length that reaches to the knees.

The main thing is not to forget to leave open areas of the body, thereby the image will not be overloaded. The most important thing is not to forget that the layers should be distinguished from each other by length so as not to look wider.

  1. The color palette should not be provocative. To look decent, it is enough to create a set in one color scheme. Bright colors should be used no more than two in one image, and the most saturated one is recommended to be used in the top layers, thereby the set will look harmonious.
  1. The pattern must be chosen correctly so that the set does not fall apart, and there is no feeling that the image is “heavy”. Only advanced ones will be able to correctly combine two or more patterns.

Principles of layering in clothing

  1. Short on top of long.

When creating an image, you need to use classical rule, and the lowest layer should be the longest compared to what is above it. This will help you see and evaluate the entire set.

If the topmost layer does not fasten, then you can neglect the rule where the shortest layer should be on top.

  1. Asymmetry.

If you use asymmetry in the image, it will allow the set to look dynamic and make it expressive; for this, it is enough to use scarves or a shoulder bag.

  1. A combination of different styles.

Layering is not characterized by a specific style, so it is permissible to mix styles, thereby creating an eclectic image.

  1. Use vests.

A vest can play a great role in creating multi-layers, and there are a huge variety of them: made of fur or leather, classic in men's style or ethnic, vest-coat, etc. The use of a vest is important when creating a layered look in fall-winter clothing.

  1. Accessories.

In order to create layers, it is enough to use a scarf, handkerchief, gloves, but the main thing is to use a limited number of accessories.

  1. "X" things.

Thing “X” creates a layered effect, and this is enough to maintain the principle of layering in clothing. Next, just choose an accessory, and the image will be completely completed.

  1. Duplication.

To create layers, items from the same category are used: two skirts or a cardigan. It will add unusualness to the image if things are different colors and volumes, where the more voluminous will be the top layer.

Important little things to remember

An incorrectly created set can add extra pounds. When dressing for plus size people, the main thing is to create optical illusions:

  • different texture. The details of the items should be different in texture (collar or sleeves), thereby creating the effect that several items are worn;
  • the drawing must be graphic. If you use diagonal lines that are correctly positioned, you can easily correct the silhouette;
  • transparency. Fabrics used for layering: chiffon, lace, organza. Under the transparent fabric there should be something that differs in color and length, and this will look impressive when creating multi-layered clothes in the summer.
