The very first body mass index (BMI) was developed by the Belgian scientist Adolphe Quetelet between 1830 and 1850 while working on so-called “social physics.” The modern term "body mass index" (BMI), as the ratio of a person's body weight (in kg) to his height (in meters) squared, was mentioned in an article published in July 1972 in the Journal of Chronic Disease by Ancel Keys.

BMI is a simplified estimate of body fat, which is crucial in determining whether a person is obese or not, but is not a direct measure of body fat, especially since age must also be taken into account in the formula. Normal BMI values ​​for men and women over 20 years of age range from 18.5 to 24.9; values ​​below 18.5 indicate underweight, from 25.0 to 29.9 are equated to overweight, and values ​​above 30.0 indicate morbid obesity. For children aged 2 to 5 years, according to WHO data from 2006, normal values ​​for girls: 15.7-15.3; boys: 16.0-15.2.

Measuring fat content and calculating active body mass can be done more accurately than simple weighing. The amount of subcutaneous fat is absolutely guaranteed to be determined using a caliper - a device with retractable grips similar to a sliding key, which is used to measure the thickness of the skin fold anywhere. There are other methods, for example, it is used, which preferentially traps some gases in fat or some minerals in the active body mass.

In children and young people, body weight should be determined only in relation to height, and not to age, and taking into account the development of the skeleton and muscles (Table 6). A child with a strong skeleton and well-developed muscles (hypersthenic type) will correspondingly weigh more than a child of the same age with an average (normosthenic type) or even small skeleton and underdeveloped muscles (asthenic type).

  • Hypersthenic type. Such a man has broad shoulders and a not very long, but wide neck. The figure of hypersthenics is stocky and strong. Very often, such men are diagnosed with a slow metabolism.

You can also determine your body type using other options. It is enough to connect the thumb and index fingers around the wrist, in the area of ​​the bone. If such a bracelet can be obtained without problems, the man is asthenic. If some effort is needed to connect the fingers - a normosthenic, if it is impossible to connect - a hypersthenic.

The norm for the male body is from 19 to 25. Therefore, the result obtained indicates that the young man is overweight for his height. Also, using this indicator you can determine the approximate level of fat in the body. To identify the type of distribution of adipose tissue, there is another calculation formula: waist circumference (cm)/hip circumference (cm). Normally, for guys this figure should be 0.85.

Using the Nagler formula, you can easily determine whether the body weight of a representative of the stronger sex corresponds to his height. So, with a height of 152 cm, a man should weigh no more than 45 kg. Further, to all subsequent 2.4 cm of height it is worth adding 0.9 kg of weight. For example, a man’s height is 185 cm, his age is 30 years, and his body type is hypersthenic. This means that the formula in action will look like this:

  • 185-110 = 75, add 10% to the result obtained. So, normally the weight of this guy should be 75.7 kg.

This method of identifying the norm is considered the most informative, taking into account the ratio of a guy’s height to body weight. This formula is based on the level of measurement of wrist circumference. So, normally all indicators look like this:

  • The volume of the sternum is equal to the circumference of the wrist, multiplied by 6.5;
  • Normal hip circumference is 15% less than chest circumference;
  • Waist volume - 70% of the result of the sternum volume;
  • Neck volume - 37% of the resulting sternum volume;
  • Biceps parameters - 36% of the sternum circumference;
  • The calf circumference corresponds to 33% of the chest circumference.

These parameters most accurately determine the norm of mass for representatives of the stronger half of humanity. Depending on which direction the deviation goes, it is worth reviewing your diet and physical activity. To clearly see what ideal you need to strive for, there is a special table. It shows weight standards for young people of different heights and different body types.

It has long been proven that over the years, the weight of any person gradually increases. But growth, on the contrary, is decreasing. So, in youth, young people are 1-2 cm taller than in old age. Therefore, norms will differ depending on age indicators.

To deduct the norm, there is a special formula that takes into account growth with age. So, the indicators for calculation are as follows: 50+0.75 (height in cm-150)+(age-20)/4. Therefore, the weight norm for a 45-year-old man with a height of 180 cm will be as follows:

  • 50+0.75(180-150)+(45-20)/4 = 50+22.5+6.25 = 78.75 kg - ideal weight.

This method of calculating the norm is not the most accurate, but popular. The results are generalized, since the nature of the man’s physique is not taken into account. Therefore, minor deviations from this norm in one form or another should not greatly disturb or worry a representative of the stronger sex. When determining your ideal weight, you should rely on your own feelings. Any man should be comfortable in his body.
